Last get-together before Uganda is TOMORROW!!! I need as much help as possible.

I'm going to bring all 90 kits that are going with me. We will need to go through each one and double-check the contents and then re-package them very meticulously to get them as small as we can for packing. If anyone has some of those vacuum bags things that they would like to let me use for packing them, please bring them!

We are also collecting panties. Days for Girls International has put a challenge out to everyone to collect as many panties as possible the month of August. Even if you could just bring one pair, please do! Every little bit helps. We need girls size 12 and/or 14.

Since we will not be cutting fabric tomorrow, we will meet in the conference room at Messiah. This will give us a GREAT workspace for an assembly line. We are still in need of shields, so those of you who are sewing, please bring whatever you have, even if it is incomplete. I will bring my snap press to finish those without snaps and my sewing machine.

Lastly, let's make this a potluck meeting if possible. If you can bring a small dish or drinks (for about 10), that would be great. I want to get as much done as possible, and we sure don't need anyone getting hungry and irritable!

Guatemala Needs

For my trip to Guatemala in just one month, I will be taking 25 girls' kits and 12 sewing kits. We need donations of new sewing scissors, thread, needles, seam rippers, and washable thin tip markers. A donation of several hand snap presses would be REALLY appreciated to be left at the Lutheran Center in Guatemala City and used when the women come in to sew, as well as the actual snaps! (See here) I will be teaching women how to sew the pads and liners by hand, and I also have a pattern that I made for underwear that I can share with them.

May 2013 Update

Exciting things happening in Georgia! Remember those 40 kits we sent to Ethiopia? They have been VERY well received and we got a wonderful email from the woman who distributed them. Not only were the girls grateful and appreciative, the organization distributing them is interested in setting up a DISTRIBUTION POINT in Ethiopia! Yay! Good work team Georgia and Puerto Rico! Man Up for Girls is coming along VERY WELL. We now have the following activities planned: puppet show, yoga class, self-defense class, facepainting, do-it-yourself pottery, and a bouncy house! Meals will be served for $5/plate, but dads eat free. Join us if you are in the area- Lutheran Church of the Messiah, 465 Clairemont Ave, Decatur GA 30030, Sunday June 16th, 12:30pm. I will be leaving for Guatemala the VERY NEXT DAY. We are holding a drive at Messiah to collect washcloths for kits. I will be taking 25 kits to the girls and then 12 sewing kits to the women I will be teaching. The Uganda trip begins August 12, and I will be taking NINETY kits! So get out your scissors and sewing machines and get to work!

PinUpGirl! Porch Party for Days for Girls!!!

Fundraising Progress

Just over 50% raised so far! A HUGE thank you to everyone who has supported this dream of mine. When I committed to the trip to Africa, I had no idea how I would be funding it. Now I find myself going not just to Africa but to Guatemala as well! All thanks to my generous friends and family. As long as I can remember, seeing the world has been my dream. Now it is coming true, and in addition to the travel, I am helping empower girls around the globe. Just goes to show... it's NEVER too late to live your dream. GoFundMe - Donate Here!

Happy New Year!

I hope that everyone had a safe and enjoyable holiday season.

Here at DFG Georgia, we took full advantage of "Black Friday" sales!!! Using $105 of our donated funds, we purchased 50 yards of fabric- 10 yards of a beautiful floral cotton for pads and 40 yards of assorted flannels for liners from Fabric.com . From Joann's Online we purchased 30 yards of flannel for $64.

What does that mean? It means approximately 200 cloth pads and 700 days-saving liners for girls' education around the globe.

We are currently assisting a church in Marietta, GA that will be sending a medical mission to Lesotho in March. They will be distributing 150 kits to girls in need and providing hygiene education.

Join us for THIS SATURDAY'S January meeting, where we will be cutting all that brand new fabric.

Thank You Thank You Thank You!

Days for Girls Georgia has so much to be thankful for, but today, I would like to put out one great big thank you to Gail, Karen, and their GIRL SCOUTS! A friend's troop recently disbanded, and they had $407 left over in their bank account. They wanted to give it to a charity, and they chose DFG Georgia!!!

So, from the bottom of my heart, thank you SO MUCH. Your very generous gift will bring THOUSANDS of days of education to girls just like you all over the world.

This morning, I purchased $150 in fabrics at rock-bottom Black Friday sale prices. Over 70 yards of fabric! The flannels averaged out to about $2/yd, and the woven cotton was a beautiful quality quilters cotton for $5/yd (I only bought 10 yards of that, the rest was flannel!)

THANK YOU,

All of the members and friends of DFG Georgia

Fall Update

It's been a long time since DFG Georgia posted an update, so this might be a long one! We have a lot of great things going on right now!

So far, I have raised $315 towards a trip to travel with DFG International next summer to Africa to distribute kits myself. Very proud of that!

We are currently working on a HUGE order! A group in South Carolina is working wtih ALARM to distribute 500 kits to schools in Rwanda in October. We will be instituting what Days for Girls lovingly calls the "UndieGround Railroad" to get these kits to their destination. I will be collecting supplies in Georgia and  taking them to Lisa in North Carolina who will then drive them to Charlotte! Shipments of donated kits and kit components have been steadily flowing in from all over the USA- from California to Puerto Rico- with more on the way. I made an initial commitment to supply this group with 225 kits, but we are far above that! Shooting for the full 500, we will still need 760 liners, 274 shields, 336 ziploc bags, and 175 washcloths. I am confident that we can get at least half of that before our deadline on Wednesday, October 10th.

Our other big news is that an Atlanta salon has agreed to host a fundraiser for Days for Girls Georgia! They are currently very busy, but the shop owner and I are supposed to touch base in a few weeks to start working out details. I don't want to give too much away... but... it's an EXTREMELY fun and unique salon.

So come one, come all to our October meeting on Saturday, October 6th at 11am at Lutheran Church of the Messiah, 465 Clairemont Ave., Decatur, GA 30030. Sewing skills not needed! Just bring your smile and sharp scissors :-)
